Experience subterranean living in Shanghai

The Intercontinental Shanghai Wonderland – which opened earlier this year to much fanfare – is quite a feat of engineering. Housed in a long-abandoned quarry and designed by UK-headquartered Jade+QA Architects, 16 of the hotel’s 18 floors are underground – of which two are submerged underwater. Six of the underwater suites even have their own underwater aquarium. For a hotel located in the city, its wholly unique location means that it’s able to offer its guests some unusual activities. You can go for a leisurely paddle around the quarry or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, try your hand at scaling the 88m cliff face.
